Cannabis has been one of the most popular analgesic remedies for thousands of years. Modern clinical trials have confirmed that cannabis is effective against numerous types of pain, and unlike opiates, cannot lead to overdose. In fact, cannabis allows many patients to reduce or eliminate their consumption of opiate medications.

Millions of people suffer from chronic pain every day.

According to a 2006 survey from the American Pain Foundation, more than half of patients feel they have little to no control over their pain. This is largely because the only options for chronic pain are opiate medications, which are primarily intended for acute pain and do not work well for long-term use. Cannabis offers a safe, effective, completely nontoxic option for many people suffering from chronic pain conditions.

While there are not many double-blind, placebo-controlled trials centered around the use of cannabis to treat various conditions, there are some for pain. Neuropathic pain is one of the most difficult to treat pain-related conditions, and is almost completely resistant to opiate treatments. A 2013 trial found that low doses of vaporized cannabis were effective for treating treatment-resistant neuropathic pain. An earlier controlled trial found that using THC and CBD together effectively relieved cancer pain that was not entirely controlled by opiates.

One of the most remarkable studies came from the Keauhou Urgent Care Center in Hawaii. The researchers surveyed 100 patients, 94 of whom responded. The average pain improvement was 64%, dropping from 7.8 to 2.8 on the traditional 10-point scale. Cannabis was noted to be an “extremely safe” and effective medication that lacked the harmful side effects of opiate medicines.

The most interesting aspect of these studies is that patients are experiencing incredible pain relief without using the highest quality cannabis extracts. Many patients are finding significant relief through smoking cannabis, without realizing they could experience even better results by using extracts. Some individuals have completely ceased use of opiate medications and achieved pain-free lifestyles with cannabis medicine. While not everyone sees these kinds of results, the ability of cannabinoids to reduce chronic pain through multiple mechanisms often leads to amazing healing experiences.
